$5.2 b Fine: MTN Refuses To Pay

There are no signs that MTN has caved in to the ultimatum to pay the fine imposed by Nigeria Government.



Reports in Lagos even suggest that NCC may have reversed itself and has settled for an amortised deal with MTN.

Minister of Communications Adebayo Shittu, in an interview with Reuters on Friday, said, “A judgment has been given, as it were, and the period for enforcement has not yet passed.”
he also said, "Nobody wants MTN to die. Nobody wants MTN to shut down".

The Telecoms company should have paid on or before midnight of November 16, a fine that is about 25%of Nigeria's annual budget.

It would be interesting, though, to see what the government's reaction will be.

In October, the Nigeria Communication Commission, NCC fined MTN the sum of $5.2 Billion,  for failing to disconnect subscribers with unregistered SIM cards bought before January 2012.
MTN allegedly had pre-registered SIMs on its database, thereby making it difficult to verify details of subscribers from biometric attributes, ultimately compromising national security.
