was chosen as the ‘word’ that best reflected the ethos, mood, and pre occupations of 2015".The several words and phrases bested by the winning emoji, including "refugee," "lumbersexual," "on fleek," "Dark Web" “ad blocker” and "sharing economy."
Other questionable terms in the past include "GIF" in 2012, which stands for "graphics interchange format". In 2013 the award went to "selfie", with faces and peace signs flooding the internet.
Emojis were initially used by teenagers but have since made it to the circle of Celebrities and politicians with Hillary Clinton using it to solicit for feedback in August.
