One would run out of fingers if one has to count the reasons given by government and citizens why they can't get their hands on a natural resource for which they are wowing foreign buyers.
Petrol means a lot to Nigerians .Not just for transportation but in nearly area of their lives.
Business are forced to shut down temporarily, because they can't afford to buy.
In Ibadan, a very large city, a litre sells for more than 250Naira almost at per with Port Harcourt that has or had two petroleum refineries.
In Akure ,Ondo state, reports say it goes for 300Naira. Gas stations still advertise the official rate of 87 naira per litre but you don't get to buy.
In Lagos where petrol equals life itself ,people sleep at gas stations hoping to buy when ever they are selling. This is done in a few hours in the mornIng .Then they put a "No Fuel" sign out.
People in the dairy business are the most hard hit.
Dealers are profiting from this problem. When they sell a few hundred litres to people who keep vigil for hours, the rest is hoarded to be sold at their whims.
The DPR often warns that it would close such stations but Nigeria is not shedding corruption because of anybody.
In Gombe state, petrol is only sold in cans that are openly displayed at the various black markets.
Some say that the major importers have not been paid their "subsidy"
The head of the state oil company,Mr Kachukwu, said in September that government would import fuel directly. Like most things the government promised to do,that has not happened.
As the pains gets get intense, the government does nothing. The president is even petrol minister but he is not addressing the issue.
Nigeria is Africa's largest producer of crude but it does not have the capacity to refine it.
