More than 700 people died yesterday in one of the last rituals of this years Hajj.
Tragic as this last stampede is,the more worry is the frequency and willingness to face death in the name of God. Saudi Authority has ordered an investigation into the incident .That hardly addresses the core issue.
Traditions are formed by people's repeated behaviours the other way around. At every hajj ,deaths become a leitmotif. Perhaps the entire process is up for a major overhaul.
Religion controls a strong part of a people's collective souls and the reforms will be difficult for them to undertake.
But people die. I don't think it's something we should get used to.
The Nigeria authorities are trying to figure out how many of its notoriously disorderly citizens are among the dead.
First, countries like Nigeria should stop sponsoring people. This is very often done without recourse to medical tests, hence cases of deaths from exhaustion and other stressful activities. As the whole process requires energy ,prospective pilgrims should go through rigorous medical tests.
There are activities in which old age is a serious hazard. Sadly but truthfully the Hajj is one of them.
It'd be interesting to see a break down of the nationalities of the fatalities. Don't be surprised if there are no Saudis. Most things are not wonderful when you get used to them.Mecca is in Saudi Arabia.
Now,apart from the cost of air transportation, there'd be more costs.Itcosts more to carry dead people.Nigeria is broke and the Hajj should be voluntary.
The same for those that go to Jerusalem
Most importantly,we should stone the devils in our individual hearts.
