MySpace attracts 1m new users

The social music and entertainment hub’s monthly traffic rose in January 2012, the first increase in almost a year at 25.1 million, according to comScore. No doubt, the efforts of MySpace’s new owners in reinventing the service is paying off well. Myspace isn’t dead, after all.

Since December, when the company introduced a new music player, sign ups have skyrocketed, the New York Times first reported -- and the company on Monday, Feb. 13, officially announced that more than one million new users had joined the growing service.
“The numbers tell an amazing story of strong momentum and dramatic change for Myspace,” said Tim Vanderhook, CEO of Myspace, in a press release announcing the new user numbers. “And the one million-plus new user accounts we’ve seen in the last 30 days validates our approach.”
The site attributed the new users largely to a new music player, called the Myspace Music Player, which it said offered the largest online catalogue of free music in the world.

User pages are highly customizable and support integration with widgets such as Slide or YouTube. MySpace provides users with a way to connect around content and culture.
In June 2011, Myspace was acquired by Specific Media for a reported US$35 million. Justin Timberlake also took ownership in this acquisition and will play a strong role in Myspace’s future strategy and creative direction.
imberlake and his team’s strategy of repositioning the site as a music service seems to be breathing at least some new life into MySpace, however. In addition to a massive catalog of songs — “eclipsing all other competitors,” as the site says — MySpace touts its new music player for a range of both mainstream and unsigned artists, personalized radio streams, recommendation feature and Facebook integration.
