JP Morgan forecasts that Apple will ship 45.5 million iPads and Amazon will sell 20 million Kindle Fires in 2012. In all, 99 million units will ship next year.
That forecast may be low still. Price wars may result in more shipments. The Kindle Fire may lead Apple to lower its prices. And the tablets in India and China will set the bar even lower. And Google is rumored to be getting into the tablet business next year. I would not be surprised to see JP Morgan and other analysts revising their figures upward yet again, in the coming months.Computer World says 10-12 million of these devices may be in the hands of students across India by the end of 2012. The CEO of Data Wind said there are 240m students in India.
Data Wind sold out of 30,000 of these low-cost tablets in three days earlier this month and has reportedly achieved pre-order sales of 400,000.
