Google’s “Search, plus Your World” is a significant overhaul to how search results are personalized for Google users. With “Search Plus,” when people are logged in to their Google accounts, their search results are now automatically personalized based on content shared from friends, most notably (but not limited to) content shared through Google services such as Google+. While search results have been personalized based on social connections for quite some time, Google Search Plus is a dramatic change to make search results much more social. For brands, it is now more critical than ever to pay attention to the intersection of search and social and cultivate an active social following, particularly on Google+. Your social prominence can make or break your visibility in the new Google Search Plus results.
At its core, Google Search Plus is simply another layer of personalization to web results, leveraging social data to infuse recommended links from trusted connections. While the “normal” web algorithm has not changed, results that have been shared by connections will receive a boost in rankings as well as a blue icon of a person indicating the result has been elevated based on a friend’s recommendation. In the image below, the changes to the search results are highlighted in red, and include an indication of how many personal results have been included, a suggested list of People and Pages on Google+ to circle, and personalized results and Images based on content shared by connections.
